Testing an Intervention to Implement a Treat-to-Target Strategy for Lupus in the Pediatric Rheumatology Clinic

Systemic lupus erythematosus, or lupus, is a chronic condition. Lupus can cause inflammation in multiple organ systems. When lupus is diagnosed in childhood, there is more risk for long-term complications. Our hypothesis is that implementing a standard way to measure disease activity during pediatric rheumatology clinic visits will lead to better control of disease and prevent bad outcomes. For this grant, our 6 centers will begin testing an intervention to use standard definitions of lupus disease activity at the point of care. We will measure the success of the intervention across our centers and also study what helps lead to success. This research will help pediatric rheumatologists know how to optimize care for children with lupus.
