Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis and School-Related Concerns

Project Period:
2023-2026

Grant Category:
Career Development Award

Disease Area:
Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA)

The quality and duration of a person’s education strongly predicts long-term health outcomes and life expectancy in the United States. Chronic childhood diseases can result in lower school participation. Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is a potentially disabling chronic childhood disease, yet the impact of JIA on school functioning is understudied. We will use health record data to identify factors that place individuals with JIA at higher risk for school-related concerns. We will interview JIA patients/parents, physicians, and school staff to understand barriers and facilitators of optimal school function among those with JIA, which will inform the adaptation of a questionnaire to measure school function. This project will guide future interventions to mitigate the negative impact of JIA on educational outcomes and maximize educational participation for individuals with JIA.
