Vice President of Philanthropy and Communications
Job Purpose
The Vice President, Philanthropy and Communications is charged with leading CARRA’s donor-centered philanthropy program, including providing leadership, strategy and expertise to ensure consistent growth in revenue that is consistent with the organization’s mission and strategic plan.
The five-fold mission of the Vice President function is to:
- Provide leadership and implement strategy to elevate CARRA’s fundraising performance
- Raise funds, thereby meeting current and future funding goals
- Manage and direct an emerging philanthropy team
- Integrate communications into philanthropy office functions
- Embed a culture of philanthropy throughout CARRA
Duties and Responsibilities
Leadership:
- Lead philanthropy program at CARRA according to philanthropy best practices
- Serve as a member of CARRA’s senior leadership team to increase philanthropy in pediatric rheumatology
- Work closely with CEO and CARRA Executive Committee and Board of Directors to develop and implement growth strategy for the organization
- Evaluate infrastructure and make recommendations to improve or retain systems and tools
- Cultivate current and future staff and volunteer leaders, providing coaching and training on philanthropy philosophy.
Fundraising:
- Successfully facilitate and close transformational gifts ($1 million+) for the organization
- Set a high standard of a donor-centered fundraising approach for staff and Board Members
- Develop and personally manage a robust donor pipeline of new and existing individual, foundation, and corporate prospects, including a major Foundation account
- Effectively implement a moves management system
- Partner with team members, CEO, and Board members to move their assigned prospects to and through solicitation
- Manage regular fundraising revenue and pipeline reports to the CARRA Board and CEO
Team Management and Leadership:
- Manage the philanthropy team to meet revenue, awareness, engagement, cultivation, and stewardship goals
- Align staff management and direction with communications and fundraising goals, priorities, and plans
- Be a thought leader on philanthropy to staff and Board leadership during programmatic and financial discussions
- Work with the CARRA team to execute the philanthropy and communications components of organization-wide events such as the Annual Scientific Meeting
Integrate Communications:
- Ensure communications strategy supports cultivation and fundraising initiatives, along with member engagement
- Collaborate with other CARRA departments to best message the successes and work of the organization and its members
- Provide overall guidance to the Director of Communications and Online Giving
- Oversee the creation of digital and print communications
Culture of Philanthropy:
- Create a strategy for celebrating, recognizing, motivating, appreciating and stewarding philanthropy throughout CARRA, engaging all CARRA staff and members in this work
- Oversee and support the development, delivery of initiatives, assuring that the goals and objectives align with CARRA strategies
- Assist with management of Corporate Partner relationships to maintain engagement of significant corporate partners across CARRA’s meetings and programs
Qualifications
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in a senior-level fundraising role with direct experience with individuals, foundations, and corporations
- Proven track record of closing six- to seven-figure gifts
- Significant experience participating in or planning and managing multi-year comprehensive or capital campaigns
- Demonstrable track record of meeting and exceeding revenue objectives
- Excellence in developing and maintaining major gifts relationships coupled with thorough knowledge of development best practices
- Team builder and effective people manager
- Innovative and collaborative approach to development strategies and practices
- Demonstrated strong planning and leadership skills with the ability to prioritize tasks to achieve goals in a timely manner
- Self-motivated with superior interpersonal, communication and organizational skills with coworkers, board members, donors, prospects, corporate donors, and high net worth individuals
- Strong writing, listening, and presentation skills
- Ability to thrive in an entrepreneurial, fast-paced remote work environment
- Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s in business or philanthropy preferred
- Healthcare, pharmaceutical, and nonprofit associations experience a plus
Compensation:
Salary for this position is competitive and depends on experience. In addition, a comprehensive benefits package is included.
