To the members and community of CARRA,
As we work together to achieve our shared vision of a world free of limitations from pediatric rheumatic diseases, it is impossible to ignore what is happening in our world today. The longstanding systemic racism faced by people of color, so dramatically evident in the death of George Floyd on May 25th, is an issue that has been ignored for too long. To our community of Black patients, families, researchers, providers and colleagues, we stand with you and offer our support and our pledge to fight against racial injustice.
CARRA was founded on principles of inclusivity and collaboration and we continue to promote our mission and vision with these thoughts as our core values. However, as an organization CARRA is appropriately asking what we can do better in the fight against racism and social injustice. The disproportionate effect of COVID-19 on people of color has emphasized the health consequences of our social system and brought overdue attention to the health disparities we see affecting our patient communities every day. As a healthcare research organization, we have a role in creating a better future for all of our communities, both through the research we conduct and in the way we engage with people within our organization, among our partners and throughout the communities around us.
We encourage you to join us as we commit to opening our eyes, examining our biases and engaging in courageous and difficult conversations. As the CARRA leadership, it is our intention to turn our anger and sorrow into action directed at combatting racism and social injustice.
Our immediate next step is to form a CARRA Taskforce for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion with a mandate to examine all of CARRA’s activities and identify areas where we can take positive action and stimulate real change. We would like to solicit your input and ideas. If you have suggestions, thoughts to share or have an interest in becoming involved, please click here.
We welcome your partnership in a unified fight against structural racism, while we strive for diversity, equity, and inclusion in all aspects of our work.
With great sincerity,
The CARRA Executive Committee
