Transition Workgroup Update

The Transition Work Group, led by Erica Lawson, Aimee Hersh, and Peter Chira, is focused on conducting a qualitative transition needs assessment, the Transition Virtual Focus Group, and evaluating a recently-developed transition intervention, the iPeer2Peer virtual mentoring program.  The Transition Virtual Focus Group project will aim to assess the transition needs and priorities of teens, parents, and post-transition young adults with JIA and SLE via innovative online focus groups. As recently piloted by the JIA Outcomes group in their OMERACT focus groups, this project would use a social media-style interface to engage patients and parents across a variety of geographies and time zones. The data from this project will inform transition program development and implementation for CARRA and other organizations, while also helping to identify the most important transition outcomes and best methods for outcomes assessment. Next steps include securing a funding source and adapting the methodology from the OMERACT focus groups for the topic of transition.

iPeer2Peer is a video-chat based mentoring program, designed by Jennifer Stinson’s team at Sick Kids and successfully piloted among Canadian youth with JIA and chronic pain. The Transitions Workgroup is partnering with the Arthritis Foundation to pilot the program in the United States, as well as develop an iPeer2Peer RCT designed to study the feasibility and effectiveness of this intervention in a larger US-based population. Outcomes measured will include the impact on health-related quality of life, pain, disease knowledge, social support, self-efficacy, and adherence. Data will be used to demonstrate safety and feasibility of the program across a variety of geographic settings, describe the impact on patient outcomes, and provide support for the institutional implementation of the program.
