Project Period:
2022-2025
Grant Category:
Career Development Award
Disease Area:
Lupus and Related Conditions (SLE/RC)
Systemic lupus (SLE) is a devastating and deadly disease, especially among adolescents and young adults (AYA) of color and low-income. Disease control to prevent long-term organ damage and death requires engagement in regular SLE care, including close monitoring by a rheumatologist. Depression symptoms affect about half of AYA with SLE and may contribute to disengagement in care. This research will investigate depression symptoms as a potential contributor to disengagement in AYA with SLE and test a mobile app targeting engagement in care and providing psychological support in a vulnerable population of predominantly low-income, Black and Hispanic AYA from the Bronx, New York.
