CARRA Membership Numbers Reach Record Levels!

We are very excited to tell you that CARRA had a record year for membership growth! We had 125 new members join in 2016, bringing our current membership total to 560. WOW!

2017 Membership Renewals are Due

Membership renewal information will be sent out to all members next week. All members must renew their membership and pay any applicable dues prior to February 20, 2017 in order to be eligible for travel support to the 2017 annual meeting.

Membership renewal will include:
  • Reviewing and updating your contact information and site demographic details
  • Reviewing and updating your research groups
  • Paying any applicable dues

CARRA Annual Scientific Meeting

  • The 2017 Annual Meeting is being held from May 15-17, 2017 at the newly opened Marriott Marquis, Houston. The ACR’s Pediatric Rheumatology Symposium (PRSYM) meeting will be held directly following CARRA (May 17-20) in the same hotel.  
  • Meeting registration for CARRA will launch in mid-late February.
  • Reserve your hotel room for CARRA (& PRSYM) now here. If you are attending BOTH conferences, make sure you use our link so you stay in the same room for your entire stay!

  • The 2017 CARRA Pediatric Residents Program is now accepting applications! CARRA will sponsor up to 10 pediatric residents to come to the CARRA meeting. Limit one resident per institution. Deadline for applications is February 15. Click here for more info including the link to apply.
  • The 2018 CARRA Annual meeting will be held April 12-15, 2018 at the Hyatt Regency Denver, Colorado.

Does Depression Cause Arthritis in Teenagers?

Tamar Rubenstein, MDMental illness is certainly an important aspect of many of our patients’ struggles, and I hope I’ve made the case earlier that it’s something pediatric rheumatologists should be paying attention to… There is a lot of good literature to show that patients with chronic disease, in general, are at higher risk for mental illness.


The following CARRA positions have three-year terms beginning July 1, 2017 and are up for election:

Steering Committee Positions:
  • Early Investigator Chair
  • Research Associate Advisory Committee (RAAC) Chair and Vice Chair
  • Scleroderma, Vasculitis, Auto-inflammatory and Rare Diseases (SVARD) Chair and Vice Chair
    Translational Research and Technology Committee (TRTC) Chair and Vice Chair
Other CARRA Committee Positions: 
  • Publications Committee Chair
The above positions are funded by CARRA as follows:
  • Steering Committee Chairs: 10% salary support
  • Steering Committee Vice Chairs: 5% salary support
  • The Publications Committee Chair: 5% salary support
Timeline and Questions
  • Official “Call for nominations” with position and responsibilities to be distributed no later than January 31.
  • Nominations are due February 15. Nominate yourself or someone else here.
  • Nominees application materials (1-2 page personal statement, NIH-formatted biosketch, and photo) are due March 1.

CARRA Registry Updates

CARRA Registry
The CARRA Registry is enrolling children with new onset JIA in addition to children who have started a new arthritis medication. Currently we have 2418 subjects enrolled.

STOP-JIA (Start Time Optimization of biologics in Poly-JIA)
  • 125 of 400 subjects enrolled

FROST (FiRst Line Options in Systemic JIA Treatment)

  • 28 sites are approved to enroll
  • 2 of 200 subjects enrolled

Utrecht Summer School Opportunity
CARRA will provide funding for 2 early investigators (EI’s) to attend “Why Translational Medicine Fails – And What to do About It” which will take place in Utrecht, the Netherlands, from July 3-7, 2017 (5 days). Deadline to apply to the program is April 1, 2017. Deadline to apply for the CARRA sponsorship opportunity will be March 1, 2017. More details coming soon!

CARRA Will be Partnering with an Association Management Company
Since CARRA has been experiencing such rapid growth, we have decided to hire an association management company to provide more streamlined and consistent administrative, financial, membership and meeting support services. More information to be provided to our members soon!

SVRD becomes SVARD
The Scleroderma, Vasculitis, and Rare Diseases Group has included workgroups studying NINE different diseases: localized scleroderma (LS), systemic sclerosis (SSc), and ANCA Associated Vasculitis (AAV), Autoimmune Encephalitis (AE), Autoimmunity Immunodeficiency Monogenic disorder (AIM), Chronic Recurrent Multifocal Osteomyelitis (CRMO), Kawasaki Disease (KD), Periodic Fever, Aphthous Stomatitis, Pharyngitis, Cervical Adenitis (PFAPA), and Sjogren Syndrome (SS). To better reflect the composition of the group, the new name of the committee is now the Scleroderma, Vasculitis, Auto-inflammatory and Rare Diseases (SVARD) group.

2017 JA Conference Announcements
Save The Date for the Arthritis Foundation's 2017 National Juvenile Arthritis Conferences! 2017 JA Conference Houston, Texas – July 13-16, 2017 and 2017 JA Conference Indianapolis, Indiana – August 10-13, 2017. Scholarship applications will open this month, and Registration will open in early February!
